I have to call you out on this one. Use a program called automatix available for ubuntu , and it installs a host of things that aren't as readily available on the regular synaptics servers, along with Firefox 1.5.... And no, there is nothing you need to remove to install it.
Unless I'm missing something, I haven't had a single problem with a brand new install of 5.10 on my new 600m laptop. I am completely content. My desktop is the same way, firefox 1.5 went on smoothly with automatix.
